What you need before you file Form 2290
Have these ready and the filing takes a few minutes.
- Your EIN. The IRS requires an EIN for Form 2290; a Social Security number cannot be used. You can apply for one free at IRS.gov/EIN.
- The VIN of every vehicle. Copy them carefully: a wrong VIN means a correction later.
- The taxable gross weight of each truck, to find its category.
- The month each vehicle was first used on public roads in this tax period.
- How you will pay: direct debit from a bank account, EFTPS, or card (the provider can tell you the options).
- An email address to receive your stamped Schedule 1.
After you file
Keep the stamped Schedule 1 in each truck. Your state asks for it to register or renew plates. For a suspended vehicle (5,000 miles or less) you still file to get the Schedule 1.
