When is Form 2290 due?
Form 2290 is due by the last day of the month after the month a vehicle is first used on public highways. For trucks already on the road in July, that was August 31, 2026.
Due dates for the July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027 tax period
The tax period runs July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. Pick the month your truck was first used on public roads (by you or by the owner before you in this period) and file by the date beside it. The dates already move to the next business day when the 30th or 31st falls on a weekend or holiday.

What if I miss it?
The IRS charges penalties for filing late and for paying late, plus interest. If you have a reasonable cause, the IRS tells you to send a letter explaining it, or to ask for penalty relief at IRS.gov/PenaltyRelief. Do not attach the explanation to your return.
You can file early
There is no benefit to waiting. Once the IRS accepts your return, a stamped Schedule 1 is usually available within minutes, and you need it to register or renew your plates.
