How much is the Form 2290 tax?
The tax depends on the taxable gross weight of the truck. For July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027 it runs from $100 at 55,000 lbs to $550 at 75,000 lbs and over ($412.50 for logging vehicles).
Full-year tax by weight category
These amounts are copied from the IRS Form 2290 for July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. Vehicles under 55,000 lbs do not pay this tax. The tax is the same with every e-file provider; providers only differ in their own service fee.

Trucks first used after July
If the truck was first used in a later month, you pay a partial-period amount from the IRS partial-period table instead of the full-year rate. The calculator applies it for you.
What is taxable gross weight?
The IRS adds up the unloaded weight of the truck fully equipped for service, the unloaded weight of any trailer customarily used with it, and the weight of the maximum load customarily carried on both. The IRS instructions explain how registered weights in your state apply.
